EVIDENCE-BASED PSYCHOTHERAPY
Our Approach
Every relationship is different, so we draw on approaches supported by research and adapt them to you both.
-
Most conflict isn't really about the surface issue, it's about deeper needs for connection, reassurance, or feeling like you matter to your partner. EFT helps you both slow down and identify the emotions underneath your arguments, so you're responding to what's actually going on rather than getting stuck in the same fight on repeat.
-
The way we learned to connect (or protect ourselves) early in life often shapes how we show up in adult relationships. Understanding your own and your partner's attachment patterns can explain a lot about why certain moments trigger outsized reactions, and how to respond differently.
-
Built on decades of research on what makes relationships work, the Gottman Method gives you practical tools for communication, managing conflict, and building shared meaning together. It's especially useful for couples who want concrete strategies alongside emotional insight.
How we use these together:
Most couples benefit from a blend rather than one method applied strictly. Your therapist will explain their approach in your first session, and adjust it as the work progresses based on what you both respond to. None of this works without safety and honesty in the room. Whatever framework we use, our first priority is making sure you both feel able to speak openly, without fear of being blindsided or blamed.
What to expect in couples therapy at Wise Psychotherapy?
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THERAPY
Starting couples therapy can feel vulnerable, especially the first time you're both in the room together. Your first session is a conversation, not a trial. We'll get to know both of you, what brought you in, and what you're each hoping for.
In your first session
We'll hear from both of you about what's been going on
We'll ask about your relationship history and how you communicate
We'll explain how we work and answer any questions
We'll set initial goals together as a couple
Ongoing sessions
Sessions are 50-80 minutes, usually weekly or biweekly to start. We remain neutral. Our role isn't to take sides, it's to help you both feel heard and build a way of relating that works for your relationship. Occasionally we may recommend an individual session for one partner alongside couples work; this is always discussed openly first.
Privacy
What's shared in session is confidential between the three of you as a unit, with the same legal exceptions as individual therapy (risk of serious harm, and other legally required exceptions), which we'll explain clearly at the start.
However you're arriving at this, together or unsure, we'll meet you both where you are.

If something is weighing on you, whether it's a specific concern or a general sense that things could feel better, therapy can help. You don't need a crisis or a diagnosis to start. Many people begin therapy simply because they want support, clarity, or a space to work through something on their own terms.
-
This varies from person to person. Some people come for a few sessions to work through something specific, while others continue longer term. We'll check in regularly on your progress and talk openly about what pace makes sense for you.
-
Yes. Everything you share is confidential, with a few legal exceptions, such as risk of serious harm to yourself or others, suspected child abuse, or a court order. We'll walk through these limits clearly in your first session so there are no surprises.
-
Yes. We provide receipts you can submit to your extended health plan. Many plans cover registered psychotherapy, so it's worth checking your coverage before you start.
-
In most cases, yes. Let your therapist know what works best for you, and we'll do our best to accommodate.
